Outline of the course

There are three components to the course :

  1. The Lectures
  2. The Seminars
  3. The Observation Period

The links above will take you to a short description on this page. Using the links at the head of each description will take you to the MainPage for each component.

Lectures
There are thirteen lectures. We will begin by looking at First Language Acquisition, comparing the theories of Chomsky and Bruner. Then we will move on to look at Second Language Acquisition, and will use the theories of Stephen Krashen as a framework which will allow us to examine some of the main questions raised by SLA theory and research. These lectures are gradually being replaced by interactive modules. As these appear on the site, UVSQ students should use these in preference to the lectures, but may refer to the latter for background information. You can access the modules here.
Seminars
During the seminars, we will be looking at course planning and classroom techniques. Students will work in groups to plan lessons and lesson-sequences, using the Official Instructions and manuals found in collège and lycée. They will present their work in micro-teaching sessions.

Students will work in groups on a project ; at the end of the semester, they will present the written outline of a learning-sequence (four to six weeks with a class) with a specific learning level (6e, 5e, 2nd, etc.). One lesson should be presented in full detail, with a lesson plan and study materials ; students will be asked to teach the lesson to other members of the seminar.

Observation
Students will spend thirty hours in schools, observing classes and talking to teachers and administrators. Half of the time should be spent in collège and half in lycée. As far as possible, students should follow one class for ten hours in each establishment. The other five hours may be spent talking to teachers and administrators and visiting different classes. Students will write up an account of their experience in the Rapport d'Observation
