Module 1.1

Acquiring a first language

How do children acquire their first language? Which of the following processes do you think help a baby learn to understand and to talk her mother tongue? Try and think of concrete examples that you have noticed.

  1. Listening to her parents.
  2. Repeating what her parents say to her.
  3. Being corrected by her parents and others.
  4. Any others?

Which of these do you think is the most important?

When you've thought about these questions, go on to Hypothesis 1 : the LAD.
